Discussion and Feedback

Siro says:
*Okay, so far this is a very interesting analysis of the designs you chose and how you made them your own. The part about them initially being very Problem Sleuth but blossoming into their own style is very interesting.
*I always like seeing how art evolves.
Loonar says:
*thank you
*I haven't uploaded my newer stuff
Siro says:
*I look forward to a point when you do
Loonar says:
*I'll see if I have any on my twitpic
Siro says:
*I like seeing how the faces evolved too and offered more personality
Loonar says:
*everyone has different eyes now
*it was really difficult actually to come up with a good facial expression for Pandamonium
*because of how I've changed her eyes
*I have a whole page of terrible facial expressions
Siro says:
*Hahaha. Yeah, fiddling around and getting something you really like can be so tricky.
*I like the bios a lot.
*Especially Lucy and Matt's
*They seem very interesting
Loonar says:
*Matt is very interested in his character
*which is great and difficult at the same time
*cos there's a point where you have to go 'NO YOU HAVE A TRILBY. HATS ARE COOL.'
*but he really likes the final design for his character which I'm really glad about
Siro says:
*Haha, that can be tricky, people being toooo interested in someone based on them.
*It's a very classy design.
Loonar says:
*I'm just glad we agree on it
*Lucy didn't have much interest with hers cos she stopped hanging around with us as much
*but I think she'd be alright with her character
*my main worry with the character designs is like
*three of the ladies
*myself included
*are generally more busty but also not very thin
*whereas Lucy is thin but also a little less busty?
*and it's that where it gets tricky
Siro says:
*Ahh, so is communicating this in the art tricky?
Loonar says:
*and you think 'Are they going to be alright with this design?'
*yeah
*like you don't want to point it out
Siro says:
*Ahh yeah, because you want to visualize this but you don't want them to be offended
Loonar says:
*but you do want to show that the characters have different builds
Siro says:
*Since no one wants to be like ''Hey you have a flat chest so that's why you look like this''
*Indeed!
Loonar says:
*yeah!
Siro says:
*So that's tough, making it unique but not making it insulting.
Loonar says:
*yeah
*but
*with the line up I did
*I think it worked out okay
*but again it comes with like
*the two thin characters are on the 'Evil' side
*even though they all work together
*so then you get this kind of metatextual I guess part where it's like 'What if people think you're saying that thin = bad??'
*whereas it's more just that's where everyone decided to be
Siro says:
*Ahhh, yeah, because people really, really read into things.
*Exactly.
*These things just sort of happen.
*It's not a commentary, it's just how the designs worked.
Loonar says:
*yeah
*I mean
*they could be worked into a narrative
*but I don't see a point to it?
*Like, if it came to anything
Siro says:
*It just seems like an odd thing to make into a big point, yeah.
Loonar says:
*there would be more of an 'explanation' towards the three of us being larger
*which could be any number of things
*but towards thinner characters, people would tend to go 'that's how they are'
*but you can't just have a fat character : /
*like thin is default?
Siro says:
*I hate that, people always question why someone's bigger in a story, like what's the point of that, when really, it should just be ''Because different people look differently''
*It isn't a matter of THEY'RE FAT BECAUSE....
Loonar says:
*yeah
*I mean
Siro says:
*Or you get into really bad stuff like ''Why is this character black''
Loonar says:
*if anything
*you could say it's because we all have depression
*oh that's another layer
*it's like
*all of my characters are white
*because
*all my friends are white
Siro says:
*Ooooh yeah that's another big thing people latch onto
*There are always people who work sooo hard to find unflattering subtext in stories
*and it's unfortunate because it's just how these things work out
*You based it on your friends soooo...
Loonar says:
*See, there is a point.
*That there aren't enough non-white non-stereotypical characters in comics
*and I agree with that
*but
*I am totally not the one that should be writing about that
*mainly because I'm white, and practically everyone I know is white too.
Siro says:
*Yeah, there's definitely truth to it in some stories, just not here.
Loonar says:
*How can I write a character whose experiences socially are different to mine? In terms of privilidge and prejudice and such.

Preliminary Designs

These are all sketches I did during the Icons project to design the characters. Each of them is based on myself and my friends, with only one not being part of our group at college. Input was given from each of them, such as alignments (Good or Evil) as well as clothing and abilities.

Written and Drawn Respons: Marvel Comics

I don’t even know where to begin with comics. My dad’s always been a big fan of comics, mainly Marvel, and as such we have had a massive collection of his old copies upstairs in the attic. The first comics I read were the Dark Phoenix Saga from X-Men, which I read because I watched the cartoon based off it. While I didn’t continue really reading comics, I kept up more with cartoons based off them. I was a big fan of the Spider-man cartoon series, and whenever a new cartoon series or film comes out, I will usually check it out.

Media Response: Fineliners and Promarkers

These little bird-like-mage characters are from the game Kingdom Hearts, which is a collaboration between Square Enix, the company behind the Final Fantasy series, and Disney. These are fairly common enemies in the series, and come in different colours and in turn, have different abilities. Their design is fairly simplistic compared to other characters from Kingdom Hearts, which is the main reason I wanted to draw them

I drew these after digging out my Promarkers, as before I hadn’t really used them. Promarkers are somewhat expensive, but are good quality alcohol based pens which come in a wide variety of colours, usually sold in themed packs. Their main selling point is that they are used for comics, but the marketing for them puts emphasis on their use in anime/manga.

Pokemon: Written and Drawn Response

Pokemon became a massive phenomenon in the 1990s, as both a game and an anime series. As a series, these both carry on through to today, with older fans who started the games when they were younger and new younger fans just starting out.

♋ DON'T DO DRUGS. ♋: Why I love the new MLP: Friendship is Magic.

monoe:

schim:

I think this is one of the best shows that has come up in a long time.

It is incredibly valuable as a feminist piece. And if that line upsets you, I suggest you go and learn what feminism really is.

To me, this show is groundbreaking. Here we have something that can be, and is, enjoyed by all ages and all genders, but why is this?

Because there are no gender norms. Yes, the cast is primarially female, and yes there are a lot of things that people would associate with girls. But that’s not the case. Colors are not inherently gender based. Dresses are not inherently gender based. Ponies and horses are not inherently gender based.

Even the main cast of characters do not fit into the stereotypical cookie cutter expectations of women. They are incredibly well developed, well rounded, and VERY individual. There is usually a few characters, or certain aspects of a character, that viewers can relate to and that is a strong aspect of good writing.

The way the characters are set up it hardly matters if they are boys or girls. Their personlity is not tied down by gender expectations. They could easily be turned into the opposite sex and it not affect them as a character at ALL.

They just so happen to be females.

I think it is good that the cast is mainly female because it people tend to favor males and males get more attention from writers as well. You won’t find any cast aside writing here, with damsels in distress that need a big strong man to save them, no. This show fully supports people both helping themselves and their friends.

But I think the fact that the show is mostly female helps people to NOT focus on the favored male role. To NOT set aside female characters or ignore them completely. It makes people realize, OH HEY! Female characters are just as valuable as male ones.

And that is something we desperately need in our society.

Not only does the show promote equality, but each episode is a wonderful message about friendship. I would say little kids definitely need to learn these things, but adults do too.

And if you learn something from a kid’s show, I would hope you are not embarrassed about that. Because there is NOTHING wrong with a show targeted towards kids. There is NOTHING wrong with liking a show targeted towards kids, no matter how old you are. As long as you are improving yourself and are happy, it doesn’t matter what inspired you.

I am completely grateful that we have a show that promotes such positive things. We really need more shows like this.

THIS IS A FUCKING GREAT SHOW.

This is a fucking great post.

Analysis of Media: Fineliners, Line Work

Rabbit Heart

This was an experiment with the linework of my inked sketches. Instead of just having the line thickness the same all the way round on the outside, I tried filing in the corners a bit to make it seem a bit softer. I think this works quite nicely and adds a bit more depth.

Visual Response: Art Nouveau/Alphonse Mucha

Fullsize

With this I was trying to draw something inspired by Alphonse Mucha. I think it came out well and I’m very proud of it. Even if the lines are inprecise and it’s a bit wobbly.
